Drinking Vodka and Red Bull ‘Causes Similar Effects as a Cocaine Hit’
Experts have warned that drinking vodka with Red Bull has a similar effect on the brain as taking cocaine.
Scientists have warned that the potent mix of highly caffeinated energy drinks with alcohol has a mind-altering effect on teenagers which lasts into adulthood.
Energy drinks Red Bull and Monster are marketed towards teenagers, and can contain as much as ten times the caffeine as soft drinks.
The research was carried out by a team of American researchers. The study involved using young mice to investigate the effects of mixing the drinks after an earlier study showed that Red Bull could ease psychosis in young people.
Dr Richard van Rijn, from Purdue University, Indiana, said: “It seems the two substances together push them over a limit that causes changes in their behaviour and changes the neurochemistry in their brains.”
Increased levels of a protein called FosB, were also detected during the study, which indicates a signal of long term changes in brain chemistry that occurs in drug users.
